I went to see Lilo & Stitch this weekend without high expectations, given Disney’s recent track record with live-action remakes. Most struggle to match the charm of their animated originals and some are just plain bad (looking at you, Snow White).
This new adaptation Lilo & Stitch is entertaining, but it doesn’t quite recapture the magic of the original. Key characters are missing, and the new additions don’t make up for them. Some beloved arcs are altered or underdeveloped, and the film feels rushed in certain scenes. It skips over some of the most emotional beats that made the animated version so special, and it doesn’t bring enough of a fresh take to stand on its own.

That said, the clear standout of this movie is Maia Kealoha, who shines as Lilo. Her performance is heartfelt and charming. She carries the film and steals every scene she’s in.
If you’re looking for light family fun and aren’t too attached to the original, this remake is a fine weekend watch, especially with few other family films out right now. But for fans of the 2002 classic, it may feel more like a missed opportunity than a meaningful reimagining.
At Truth Be Told, we’re giving Lilo & Stitch (2025) a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
